You Suck at Marketing

Marketing is an essential aspect of any business, big or small. It’s the key to attracting customers, increasing sales, and growing your brand. That said – many of you (small business owners) suck at marketing. Listen, these are your words, not ours. We repeatedly jump onto calls where you say it multiple times within the first 5 minutes: “I just suck at this.”

Why, though? What are you doing wrong that makes you so seriously terrible at marketing your business? Again, your words, not ours.

We have a few ideas:

1. You have limited resources.

One of the most significant challenges small business owners face is limited resources, including budgets, manpower, and time. Unlike larger corporations, small businesses often operate on shoestring budgets, making it challenging to invest in comprehensive marketing campaigns. Additionally, many small business owners wear multiple hats and have limited time to dedicate to marketing efforts.

Solution: To overcome this challenge, small business owners can focus on cost-effective marketing strategies, such as social media marketing, content marketing, and email marketing. You can also consider outsourcing specific marketing tasks to experts or freelancers, allowing you to concentrate on your core business operations.

2. You lack marketing expertise.

Marketing is a specialized field that requires a deep understanding of consumer behavior, market trends, and various marketing channels. Small business owners may not have the expertise or training needed to develop and execute effective marketing strategies.

Solution: To bridge this gap, you can educate yourself about marketing by attending workshops, online courses, or hiring a marketing consultant. Or, collaborate with marketing professionals who can guide you in creating and implementing successful marketing campaigns.

3. You have inconsistent branding.

Many small businesses struggle with inconsistent branding, which can confuse potential customers and dilute brand identity. Inconsistent branding can manifest in various ways, from mismatched logos and inconsistent messaging to erratic posting schedules on social media.

Solution: Small business owners should develop a clear and consistent brand identity that reflects their values, mission, and unique selling points. This includes using the same logo, color scheme, and messaging across all marketing channels. Consistency builds trust with customers and reinforces brand recognition.

4. You neglect digital marketing.

In today’s digital age, online presence is crucial for businesses of all sizes. However, small business owners notoriously underestimate the power of digital marketing and they struggle to keep up with ever-evolving online trends and algorithms.

Solution: You should prioritize digital marketing efforts, including creating and maintaining a user-friendly website, engaging in social media marketing, and optimizing your online presence for search engines (SEO). Staying informed about digital marketing trends and tools can help you adapt and thrive in the digital landscape.

5. You don’t know your target audience.

Successful marketing begins with a deep understanding of the target audience. Small business owners often struggle to identify their ideal customers’ needs, preferences, and pain points, leading to ineffective marketing strategies.

Solution: Conducting market research, creating customer personas, and seeking feedback from existing customers can help you better understand your target audience. Tailoring marketing efforts to address the specific needs and desires of your ideal customers can lead to more successful campaigns.

You only suck at marketing if you refuse to take the necessary steps to strengthen your approach. Allocating resources wisely, gaining marketing expertise, maintaining consistent branding, embracing digital marketing, and understanding your target audience will all contribute to making you a better DIY marketer. However, if you’re overwhelmed by the thought of adding all of that to your business ownership plate – then you definitely know the value of being able to hand it off to trusted pros.
